In my own shipping, I still do the bulk USPS, but I do sometimes wonder why!Mikehttp://livetheneweconomy.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762805374708307306.post-27444443027175786432012-05-24T14:36:37.801-04:002012-05-24T14:36:37.801-04:00Thanks for your comment, Daisy. It cost us $5000 for him to sit in pubs, drink beer and experience where writers got drunk before they wrote classics. So, anyway, Becca was depressed at not going home with the rest of the class and she loved yellow jelly beans (Brachs). So Peter bought three bags of Brach's jelly beans, sorted out the yellow ones, and mailed them to her for $36 dollars (I think it was my $$ not his). Maybe not, I really don't remember. The Mail Boxes Etc. clerk was astounded. And. this wasn't a girlfriend, but a girl who was a friend. But that's my boy. Total romantic. What else could a Brit Lit major be? lol. I feel your pain.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06370518994926764708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762805374708307306.post-7593683988640575632012-05-09T15:46:37.186-04:002012-05-09T15:46:37.186-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06370518994926764708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762805374708307306.post-67640318680536321772012-05-09T08:55:23.190-04:002012-05-09T08:55:23.190-04:00Marjorie:

Maybe if they had fewer snotty clerks wasting their time trying to collect another $9, the deficit could be reduced to a more palatable $2.4 billion!!!!

Now for a story from my side:
My daughter knows I love Girl Scout cookies, so she sent 3 boxes to me via USPS. She paid $54.85 in postage, making the cookies outrageously expensive.

We received a notice from the Spanish Postal authorities notifying me that I had a package to pick up, so notice in hand, I trudged the 1.5 miles from our apartment to the Correo office where I was greeted by a pleasant clerk. I presented my Spanish ID card, and she walked back to the overflowing shelves to retrieve the package. On return, she weighed the package, picked up her calculator and announced that there was postage due in the amount of 36 euros (US$47). Not having money in my wallet, I walked around the corner to the closest ATM (which charged me 3 euros for withdrawing 50 euros), walked back to the Correo office, paid the 36 euros and walked back home.

Total ostage for three boxes of thin mints was an outrageous $101.85 - maybe $1 for each thin mint!!!!! Oh my goodness gracious sakes alive!!!!

When governments get in trouble (e.g., USA & Spain), they'll do ANYTHING to close the gap, including requiring you to pay first class postage and taking my Girl Scout cookie shipment hostage! It's just a fact of life and the reason I have started using UPS for all international shipments! Further, I have asked family and friends to PLEASE not send anything to me through USPS!

So now, both of us feel better, having expressed our frustration!
Wonderful article, Marjorie. Many thanks!!

Aaron Ashcraft
Barcelonaaa66https://www.blogger.com/profile/14510489429577075178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762805374708307306.post-3879004842917687312012-05-08T14:39:26.693-04:002012-05-08T14:39:26.693-04:00Sounds like a good idea. Generally I never think about media vs. non-media when shipping; I go the route of more money via UPS and daily pickup from work and pay the company. Traceable and convenient!

ToniAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
